The men who began to dig mines at Spiennes, 6,000 years ago, were amongst the earliest miners in history. They had just discovered a rich and high-quality flint bed that was to be mined for the next 1,800 years.
Spiennes marked one of the peaks of prehistoric civilisation in Europe (from the Palaeolithic Era to the Stone Age), when the former Neolithic mines were modernised. Currently, the site is the centre of a renovation project involving the construction of an exhibition centre. The site is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO

Like most of the waterlogged sites in the Haine Valley, the Harchies-Hensies-Pommeroeul Marshes originate from mines that collapsed from the middle of the 20th Century onwards.  The resulting depressions quickly filled with water and became the ponds we know today.
