The Romelaëre Nature Reserve in Clairmarais
When the sea levels sank in the 4th Century BC, a vast swamp was left behind: the Romelaëre, once infamous in the region for being located in an ‘impracticable marsh’ area. The region was farmed for its peat deposits by Guillaume Romelaëre from the 18th to the end of the 19th Century. Years of peat-digging have left their mark on the landscape, in the form of a mosaic of ponds and rivers that are perfect for country walks.
