The Abbeville Golf Club in Picardie North France, has an history about its creation.
It all began some fifteen years ago with a crazy scheme hatched by a group of friends with a common passion for golf. Of the initial band, only Christophe Ménesson, the Director of the course, is still around to tell the tale. Christophe is a man for whom the word "roots" is replete with significance for it is on his family's property, on the outskirts of Abbeville in Picardie, in a valley and on the plateau that overlooks it, that this 18-hole golf course-today run by Mr. Poidevin from Nampont-Saint-Martin, was designed.
Valley… plateau…: two words that sum up the profile of "Les Grands Laviers", which manages to strike just the right balance between flat tracts -especially on the plateau-
and others, be they uphill or downhill.
The alternating terrain allows play to progress at a good pace but calls for the careful regulation of one's efforts, particularly before "attacking" the last holes as there is the 13th to be dealt with first. The thirteenth hole…"The uphill climb into Hell", as some would have it! So much so that a "#13b" was created… to the great surprise of others! Well you can't please everyone! Notwithstanding, once the climb has been digested, and the 13th hole played, your efforts are rewarded in the form of a genuine, mountaintop, par-3 hole whose tee overlooks the green some ten metres below. Beautiful,…but not easy because of the wind. An energetically wielded number-three wood is sometimes necessary !
Nature did not require much shaping to obtain this result:  the Picardy course -the work of Didier Fruchet, known for his rehabilitation of Etretat- blends in perfectly with its natural surroundings and willing yields to the presence of copses and the odd pond. Its sole concession to the modern world was imposed from without: the motorway is visible in the distance, at the edge of the practice green (but it does make it so much easier for the Parisian clientele to get here!).
The bunkers are discreet both in number and in form: no bomb-holes here! The level
of physical output required is enough as it is. All in all, from a technical point of view, the course is not a "killer". If you do get bogged down, you will only have yourself to blame, and if you happen to be short of exotically sounding birds' names to use as expletives, you will be spoilt for choice: each hole bears the name of one of the many birds the contribute to the rich Picardy faunal !
