Oudenaarde golf Club

For years this region was highly coveted by lords and princes, as witnessed by the succession of fortified castles in the bend in the river Escaut. When passions waned, castles intended
for more peaceful purposes appeared. Two of these can still be found on the grounds of the Oudenaarde course where three, 9-hole
circuits have been designed around them. Whereas the one that dates back to the 18th century is visible from afar, the other, the
chateau de Petegem—completed in 1845, today serves as a magnificent clubhouse whose majesty, along with that of the ancient tapestries that it houses, have done nothing to dampen the conviviality and the warmth of its occupants.
The three 9-hole courses—the work of Harold Baker—are disposed around this chateau. "L'Abdij" (the Abbey) and "L'Anker" (the Anchor) are both longer than "Le Burchte" (the Castle). Although two of the courses were opened in 1976 and the last, "Le Burchte", in 1990, they all bear the mark of the same hand, and likewise, they all require a similar degree of precision.
Water is more obviously present on "Le Burchte", with a pond that is situated right opposite the chateau and which must be cleared in the first three holes. Once done, though, the water is left behind. It is less visible, but more devious, on both "L'Abdij" and "L'Anker" (whose holes overlap), which are laid out, for the most part, between the Escaut and an oxbow of the river. Look out, then, for ditches, streams and other obstacles that cut across the fairways, which are flat on the whole but gently undulating in places.
One should also try to refrain from being
distracted by the ancient trees that make up the majestic décor. Whether tulip, liquidambar, ginkgo or cedar, your concentration should remain unwavering for, as was
mentioned before, Oudenaarde calls for a game of precision.
