Flanders the Industrious… its dynamic businesses and its congested motorways are just a stone's throw away but Waregem and its Happy Golf Club continue to exude tranquillity. It is scarcely surprising, then, that the Carmelites have found here, far from the hustle and bustle
of everyday life, a site that is perfectly suited to their life of contemplation. And the course that Paul Rolin sculpted from these plains in 1988 perfectly reflects the mellow, soothing harmony of the surrounding countryside. Only the occasional undulation interrupts the flatness of the grounds, which is suitable for players of all levels.
But do not go away with the idea that Waregem is easily conquered. Here, scores are never very low. The fairways are rather narrow and well demarcated by curtains of trees -magnificent in Autumn- that one would do well to avoid as they have increased in density over the years. The roughs around the greens are bushy and invariably penalize the careless player. As for the greens themselves, their appearance -flat for the most part- offers no guarantees. Indeed, they dissimulate two major difficulties: their relatively small size, which calls for accuracy, and above all, their extreme and uncommon rapidity, which has surprised more than a few players.
The course is divided into two distinct sections, the second of which includes the last nine holes. The latter are laid out around a few lakes that, in addition to their psychological impact, force players to adopt a more technical game and to display more precision in their appreciation of distances and the amplitude of their swings. The game will be won or lost more specifically on the 13th, 14th, 15th (all par 4s) and 16th holes, the latter being
a 176-metre long par 3 whose green is situated on a peninsula. Accuracy, then, is the watchword.
