Nostalgic, here in the town of Westende, which is situated between Nieuport and Ostende. Consider this: among the dunes of Lombardsijde, on the right bank of the Yser, there was once an 18-hole course, but that was before the war. Unfortunately, the grounds were to suffer the ravages of the conflict and today is the site of a nature reserve. Hands off!
Westgolf, which was designed by Bruno Steensels and completed in 1999, will therefore never be an 18-hole course and its managers are contented enough as it is to be able to upgrade the course from 6 to 9 holes over the coming three years. Once this has been accomplished, the course will be in an even better position to fulfil its initiatory role, a goal that it easily achieves, given the constantly high levels of demand.
But all of these novices continue to come back, even after they have won their stripes. It would seem that they appreciate the extremely warm atmosphere of the place. Additionally, although the course is short -1,222 metres-
it is not always very easy to play. Even experienced players can find themselves confronted with a complex task: the six holes (four par 4s and two par 3s) are narrow and flanked by water hazards and thus require a good dose of technique and precision. Golfers come to Westgolf not only to acquire these qualities but also to improve them!
