Man's folly has left an indelible mark on this Flemish soil: British military cemeteries dot the landscape, recalling the terrible battles that were fought here from 1914 to 1918, just minutes away from a town, Ypres, whose name will be associated for all time with an atrocious
chemical-warfare gas.
Palingbeek, which is situated on a highly coveted ridge, was not spared this horrible eruption: the imposing chateau Mahieu, the property of Armentières industrialists and the place that William II had set his eyes on for his future home (after the capture of Ypres… which never took place), had to be razed to the ground, so great was the damage. The building that replaced it today serves as the elegant clubhouse of a course designed by Harold Baker and completed, in 1992, on a part of the grounds of the chateau and on adjacent farmlands. The view of the British cemetery, a handful of carefully preserved vestiges and a monument in honour of the two Mahieu sons who gave up their lives for France, are all reminders of this horrible period that is totally at odds with the Palingbeek course.
Water?…Not much. Changes in the profile of the terrain?…Some. Trees?…No more and no fewer than necessary, around a carefully preserved nature reserve. Bunkers?… Discreet in their presence.
After having played 9 holes on a plateau that is slightly undulating in place, one arrives at a ridge that makes for variety. The fairways are wide and tolerant so that those who go in for the slice or the hook will not be too heavily penalized. Objectives -and traps- are all clearly visible and anyone, regardless of their level, can achieve a good score, provided they are in good physical condition. Indeed, the course is relatively long (6,165 m from the back tees) and it is mainly because of this feature that the designer refrained from
complicating matters further.
